In 1790, Edmund Burke, a notable member of Parliament, published a scathing rebuke of the French Revolution, its aims, and its principles. At a time when it wasn't appropriate for a woman to engage in public debate, Mary Wollstonecraft responded to Burke with her Vindication of the Rights of Man. After finishing at this work, Wollstonecraft began writing A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, the work for which she is best known. Wollstonecraft's willingness to step into the arena and engage the public in debates about liberalism and feminism.
