Strange Fruit (Meeropol) by Billie Holiday and her Orchestra, piano interlude by Sonny White A poem on the horrors of lynching provided the basis for this famous, dark, intense Holiday recording, which she was given permission to make with Milt Gabler’s jazz label Commodore when both her regular producer and record label (Columbia) refused to record the song with her.
