Prison officers carried out “inappropriate and disproportionate” restraint on a prisoner moments before his death, an inquest has found. Azroy Dawes-Clarke, 28, from Romford, east London, was an inmate at HMP Elmley, on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, when he died after suffering multiple cardiac arrests on November 10 2021. Handcuffs were wrongly applied to Mr Dawes-Clarke which may also have played a contributing factor in his death, the inquest heard.
