An immense coastal forest stretches on either side of the India and Bangladesh border. The Sundarbans mangroves, consisting of approximately 10,000 square kilometers of these majestic trees, is the world’s largest forest of its kind, characteristic of tropical coastlines. Neglected for far too long and weakened by devastating overuse, the mangrove is now viewed as a natural cure-all: the gracefully intertwined roots act as a buffer for tidal surges and tsunamis, the mudflats trap the sediments carried by the flooding rivers and its thick canopy provides protection from the monsoon winds. In one of the world’s poorest country, and one of the most vulnerable to natural catastrophes, the large green rampart is more than a beautiful biosphere reserve. Fishermen, farmers, hunters, NGOs and forest management official are all now working to protect the mangrove forest in return for the protection it provides.
