Hello, comrades. Thank you all for 1,000 subscribers! This video is dedicated to you all and for a thank you, I will be letting you all see the documentary that I have been making at college about the 1984 and the 1985 Miners' Strike that happened in my country. The Miners’ Strike of 1984 was possibly Britain’s biggest and most important working class uprising since the General Strike of 1926 that happened when Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister. The 1984 Miners’ Strike, which was led by Arthur Scargill and the NUM or the National Union of Mineworkers, was, as the British ruling class likes to call it, a mob. Well, frankly the ruling class can call it whatever they like, but it is the job of Marxist-Leninists like myself to inject that sort of movement with consciousness because the responsibility to change society doesn’t lie in a concession put out by our rulers, but with workers themselves. Unfortunately, the coal miners and the National Union of Mineworkers didn’t win the 1984 strike and the collieries that once powered communities across the country were closed down by Margaret Thatcher and the British government. It is said that even today, just over thirty years after the strike, that communities are still fighting and really, I personally don’t blame them because back then, coal powered approximately 80% of Britain and the collieries were the biggest employers in the country, especially in what are today, some of the most deprived areas of the country in places like Wales and Northern England. Even where I live in Drefach by Tumble in South Wales, there were collieries that people worked in that were close by, with the most famous one that my grandfather worked in; Cynheidre Colliery that was located towards Llanelli. Over thirty years on, however, jobs and employment in these areas are very scarce and many young people like myself either find themselves moving to Cardiff or even London just to find a decent job. On top of this, Capitalism itself deprives the proletariat of the right to work in the first place and the working class find themselves with no choice but to sell their labour to a Capitalist and compete against other workers to survive. The ones who are lucky enough to find a job are then exploited by the Capitalist because of the production relations under Capitalism; the workers produce the value through their labour, the Capitalist extracts that value and only a tiny fraction of it go to the workers as a wage. Essentially, workers under Capitalism don’t get to keep the value that they produce. The subject of the Miners’ Strike of 1984 and 1985 is one that really does interest me, not just from my Marxist-Leninist perspective of the world, but also as an individual, that such a significant and important event happened right here in my country and also basically on my doorstep. In this documentary, I will not just be relying on books, articles and reports, but I’ll also be gathering first-hand information from five participants who were all around during the time of the strike, as they have been generous enough to give up their time to tell us their perspectives of the event. Frankly, you can read as many books as you like, but it’s only when you talk to these people that history really comes alive. Keep the red flag flying, comrades.
