Over the Christmas break, HS2 engineers completed two major viaduct spans over the existing Birmingham–Peterborough railway near Water Orton in Warwickshire — a key milestone in building the Delta Junction, one of the most complex sections of the HS2 route. Using a five-day railway closure during the quieter festive period, teams working for HS2’s main works contractor, Balfour Beatty VINCI, safely installed the parallel spans as part of the new high-speed line east of Birmingham. The Delta Junction will carry HS2 services to and from Birmingham, while also connecting the mainline heading north and south. This new timelapse footage shows the precision engineering behind the Water Orton viaducts, which will eventually stretch around 1.4km across railways, roads, rivers and the M42 motorway. Built using pre-cast concrete segments and a specialist cantilever construction method, the viaducts are designed to support trains travelling at up to 360km/h on the mainline. With the railway crossing now complete, work will continue next year on the remaining sections over the A446 and the M42. 📢 Subscribe for the latest news and updates from Britain’s high-speed railway, HS2.
