Grouse, Hemlock, and Smith lake is a 6-mile hard hike not far from Lake Tahoe. Amazing trail! Bucket list hike in the Sierra Nevada! Grouse, Hemlock, and Smith Lake need to be added to your list of hikes to do! Crystal clear lakes that you see to the bottom of the lakes. They are so beautiful you have to see them for yourself. These hikes are located in the Sierra Nevada mountains out of Lake Tahoe in northern California. Great hike that is a little more challenging than Twin lake. The hike is only 3 miles into the first lake but with a huge elevation gain all the way up to the lakes. If you take your time you can do it. It was a little harder due to all the fires in California this year and the smoke in the air. The views were incredible. I would get there early to find a parking spot or you will have to park in the lower lot which adds about 1 1/2 miles to your hike. There is an $8.00 charge so get your ticket at the lower parking. There is no ticket box at the upper lot near the trailhead. In normal years you need a permit to hike or backpack overnight into desolation wilderness. This year is a bit different due to the virus outbreak. In normal years the permits are available at the trailhead. The first lake you come to is Grouse lake which is a scenic small alpine lake. After passing along and going not much farther you crest the hill and come to a more stark lake with granite walls which is Hemlock lake. It had beautiful blues and green colors. This lake is just stunning. We had both of these lakes to ourselves which was such a treat. Follow the trail to the right of Hemlock and you will have about another 350 ft gain in elevation. SO worth the effort. When we saw Smith Lake for the first time it took my breath away! The lake is in a spectacular granite bowl surrounded by tall peaks with their slopes diving right into the clear water. You could see all the way to the bottom of the lake. The gorgeous granite walls around the lake. WOW WOW WOW. We did see 2 other hikers jumping off rocks into the water. Take a suit for a swim. I have to go back to this hike again soon! Correct: In my video, I said it was a 2400 ft elevation gain. My ALLTrails gave me wrong information. ( maybe user errors haha) ** This trail is now closed due to all the wildfires in the area. So check ahead before heading out. I did this trail in September when the trail was still open ** ⏱️Timestamps⏱️ 0:00 Intro 0:13 Crisp start to our morning hike 01:28 Turn off to Grouse, Hemlock & Smith Lake 02:52 Coyotes singing in the distance 03:57 Grouse Lake 05:04 Hemlock Lake 06:57 Smith Lake 09:54 Wrights lake/Trailhead 10:10 Thanks for watching!
