Susan Lorincz, an Ocala resident, shot and killed her neighbor, Ajike "AJ" Shantrell Owens, through a locked front door. Lorincz was 58 years old at the time of the incident. In August 2024, a jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter with a firearm. Sentencing guidelines recommended 11.5 to 30 years in prison. Lorincz's lawyer requested a downward departure from these guidelines, but the judge sentenced her to 25 years in prison. Owens was a 35-year-old mother of four who lived in the same neighborhood as Lorincz. According to a GoFundMe bio, family members described Owens as someone with an "infectious personality" and a smile that "would light up the room." The incident followed a confrontation between Lorincz and Owens' children, who were playing in a field near Lorincz's home. Lorincz allegedly yelled at the children and called 911 to report trespassing. Owens later went to Lorincz's residence, where she was shot. Lorincz claimed self-defense, stating that Owens was banging on the door and threatened to kill her. The case did not meet "stand your ground" qualifications, according to the department. Florida law allows for the use of deadly force in self-defense if a person reasonably believes they are in imminent danger. The law does not require a person to retreat before using force. Lorincz is serving her sentence at the Homestead Correctional Institution with a release date set for April 8, 2048. Owens' children live with their grandmother.
