Susan Lorincz, an Ocala resident, shot and killed her neighbor, Ajike "AJ" Shantrell Owens, through a locked front door. Lorincz was 58 years old at the time of the incident. In August 2024, a jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter with a firearm. Sentencing guidelines recommended 11.5 to 30 years in prison. Lorincz's lawyer requested a downward departure from these guidelines, but the judge sentenced her to 25 years in prison. Owens was a 35-year-old mother of four who lived in the same neighborhood as Lorincz. The incident followed a confrontation between Lorincz and Owens' children, who were playing in a field near Lorincz's home. Lorincz allegedly yelled at the children and called 911 to report trespassing. Owens later went to Lorincz's residence, where she was shot. Lorincz claimed self-defense, stating that Owens was banging on the door and threatened to kill her. The case did not meet "stand your ground" qualifications, according to the department.
