Mladi in mediji (Youth & Media) - Erasmus + project The project aimed to equip a generation of young people with the competences to critically consume and think about the content and information that technology brings to them on a daily basis. It is not enough to know how to use technology; young people need to be able to think critically about the media. Our aim was to equip young people with the skills of media literacy and critical media thinking, so that they can identify relevant information and distinguish legitimate from fake media content, so that they can think critically about content and not just passively accept it. Our aim was also to fill the gap in the offer of content on media literacy, as formal education in secondary schools does not provide media content in curriculum and also establish workshops on ML in non-formal education. Through the activities, young people firstly gained competences and MIL skills, that helped them to then develop guidelines, suggestions and key findings for media literacy, giving them the opportunity to contribute to the development of local and national youth policy. The MIL skills that this project helped to develop are to: read and consume media critically, recognise fake news, be aware of different tone and language uses, assess credibility of the source, understand that use of images, titles, bold text, vocabulary, style … all can be used to analyse the legitimacy of the news piece/media, question what is written and the use of statistics, recognise bias in reporting, recognising the specific media discourse, be aware that media is all around us and that we as participants of the society also help shape/influence the media, become responsible and critical media consumers (and creators – via responsible social media use and content creation).
