Verdun in 1916 is not a breakthrough battle. It is a deliberately engineered battle of attrition, chosen for what it forces France to do, defend a symbol, feed men into a narrow sector, and endure a level of industrial firepower that turns the fight into a self-sustaining system. This episode follows Verdun as a closed machine, continuous artillery, rotating divisions, the Voie Sacree keeping shells and men moving, and the forts becoming underground life support spaces rather than decisive castles. Midway through, the Somme appears only as external strategic pressure, an emergency operation meant to pull German strength away, because Verdun is consuming France. We end with the echo, because Verdun spreads its trauma unusually widely. When so much of the French Army rotates through one battle, the consequences do not stay at the front. Verdun does not decide the war, but it changes what the war is.
