This UFA German WWII propaganda newsreel (No. 564) dates to 1942, and is presented in Spanish, presumably so that it could be shown to audiences in Franco's fascist Spain. Segments include a range of events taking place across different locations during wartime. In Helsinki, Finland, an exhibition of war paintings by German and Finnish artists is inaugurated, with Finland’s president in attendance. In Germany, traditional Corpus Christi processions are held, while a fascist sports event takes place with Duce Mussolini’s presence. Belgian quarry workers ease their tasks by listening to music, and a tapestry workshop in Sarbo demonstrates its weaving process. In Copenhagen, Denmark, a forest and hunting museum is opened by the Danish royal family. Sweden honors aviators who died fighting Bolshevism on Aviation Day. In Prague, a large demonstration is held following the successful assassination attempt on Reinhard Heydrich, leading to a solemn funeral procession. Heydrich’s remains are ceremoniously received in Berlin. Meanwhile, the German-Romanian forces are heavily attacking the Soviet positions near Sebastopol, with intense artillery and infantry assaults. The film concludes with aerial bombings on Sebastopol’s powerful fortifications. 00:00: In Helsinki, Finland, an exhibition of war paintings by German and Finnish artists, who were part of propaganda units, is inaugurated with the attendance of Finland's president. 1:25 - 2:09: In Germany's Catholic regions, the traditional Corpus Christi processions are held. 2:26 - 3:42: The Duce attends a fascist sports event, where young fascists from various organizations take part in exercises and athletic competitions. 3:48 - 4:47: Belgian quarry workers, occupied with communication work between Brussels' north and south stations, ease their heavy workload by listening to music. 4:56 - 6:09: A visit to a tapestry workshop in Sarbo, where the process of preparing wool threads for weaving is demonstrated. 6:11 - 6:58: In Copenhagen, Denmark, the King and Queen attend the opening of a forest and hunting museum in the Herol Palace. 7:01 - 7:38: Sweden inaugurates Aviation Day, and a plaque is placed on the Aviation Monument to honor Swedish aviators who died fighting Bolshevism alongside Finland. 8:00 - 8:37: May, 1942. Reinhard Heydrich was a high-ranking SS and police official and a principal architect of the Holocaust. He held the rank of SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Polizei. He was mortally wounded in Prague on 27 May 1942 as a result of Operation Anthropoid. Nazi intelligence falsely linked the killing to resistance partisans to the villages of Lidice and Ležáky. Both villages were razed; the men and boys age 14 and above were shot. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
