Cymbidium Orchid Species and Varieties

Cymbidium Orchids - Blooms and Species. With around 50 species Cymbidium Orchids, most species are terrestrial, however some, mainly those from lower altitudes are epiphytic. All will grow well in containers. As long as they are not subject to freezes they are a remarkably hardy group. They will survive with low night temperatures down to around 3C (37F) and also grow well in warm areas, as long as they get some shade. To get good blooms, a nighttime drop in temperature during winter is essential. The many varieties that we see are the result of hybridisation and the Cymbidium Orchid species themselves deserve a closer look and today we will look at 5 species, all easy to grow and with flowers that show the diversity of this fascinating group of orchids. One of the outstanding species is C. tracyanum, widely used in hybridisation this is the most fragrant of all of the cyms. Cymbidium erythrostylum is sometimes called the red column cymbidium. Very attractive white flowers and smaller foliage the most other species. Cymbidium seidenfadenii is from Thailand, a beautiful red lipped form is pictured. Cymbidium mastersii has attractive arching flower spikes and almond scented flowers, cymbidium dayanum is also known as the Phoenix Orchid, it is long flowering, often blooming for 8 weeks. Found from northern india through china and thailand. White flowers with deep red to maroon stripes on each petal. Cymbidium hookerianum with its glossy large green flowers is also known as C. grandiflorum Cymbidium elegens is known as the elegant cymbidium with long thin bell like flowers and perhaps our favourite of them all.
