The built environment, responsible for 39% of Australia’s carbon emissions, is also a significant driver of nature loss in Australia through the clearing of land for more housing development, infrastructure roll out across regions, and the vast materials footprint which relies on nature’s services such as gravel and sand for concrete, iron ore for steel making, and lumber for timber. If we are to achieve a zero carbon, circular and Nature Positive built environment, then we need a fundamental shift in how we conceive, design, construct, operate and disassemble our buildings and infrastructure, and places we live and work in. MECLA works in collaboration across the industry supply chains to address these complex issues. This Spotlight event will look at ways and means for the built environment to evolve from merely reducing harm to actively regenerating ecosystems by looking at issues such as: 1. Urgency: The biodiversity crisis requires immediate action; built environment is part of the problem; how do we integrate the carbon, circularity and nature agendas? 2. Opportunity: The built environment can be part of the solution – what policy levers and industry leadership possibilities can and should exist? 3. Integration: Need for whole-systems thinking; different knowledge sharing and skills development – how can we do this better? 4. Collaboration: Success requires multi-stakeholder engagement across the industry supply chains – examples of success? 5. Case studies for how this can be achieved – what’s it going to take to change the culture of the industry? Presenters: • Meeghan Shellard, USyd Graduate, Capstone Project • Lisa McLean, CEO, Circular Australia • Rory Hunter, Founder, The Model • Simon Dorries, CEO, Responsible Wood Panelists: • Joshua Bishop (Environmental & Natural Resource Economist – Usyd) • Ayesha Tulloch (QUT) • Laura Hamilton - O’Hara (Living Futures Institute) • Roger Swinbourne (Positive Futures Advisory)
