Mental health crisis workers, Chris Trimmer and Richard Tyo have seen the power that music possesses. Through the establishment of their novel Musical Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) program, they have utilized music as a tool, aiding them in understanding and improving mental health. Chris Trimmer is a mental health crisis worker in Kingston, ON. He has a Master’s degree in Music Cognition from Queen’s University and has published research in the international journal, Emotion. He has received extensive training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). From 2007 – 2014, he produced a radio program featuring documentaries on the psychology of music entitled, Cognitive Dissonance. For the past seven years, Chris has played in numerous Kingston bands, including the Gertrudes, who have toured across Canada and released three full-length albums. Richard Tyo studied criminology, sociology and psychology at the University of Ottawa. He has been working as a mental health crisis worker for the last seven years in the Kingston community. He recently became an ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) trainer, teaching core skills related to suicide intervention. Passionate about music and art, he self-publishes poetry, prose and writes and performs his own songs. He has hosted events called The Midnight Magic Rodeo Show, which combine live music, art-making, poetry and education on mental health, stigma, apathy and harm reduction. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
