This cigar features an Ecuadorian Sumatran wrapper with Dominican tobacco filler. Both elements were barrel-aged and the cigar was rolled in the Dominican Republic. The RRP for this cigar is $21 with each box containing 8 tubos (tubes) generally retailing for around $168. 01:03 Look, Feel, And Pre-Light The cigar has an attractive brown hue and consistent Perfecto shape throughout. Other examples enjoyed before this review also exhibited exceptional construction and burn qualities. The wrapper possesses a medium sheen with some veins visible. The dry draw and smell of the 1903 Preferidos Emerald elicit notes of hay, sweetness, slight barnyard, and earthiness. 01:52 Lighting & First Third The initial impression of this Preferidos Emerald Perfecto is that of a medium to full-body cigar. The flavor is rich and deep with tones of earth, oak, cinnamon spice. The retrohale at this point also mirrors the earth encountered previously. 02:35 Box Presentation & Accessories The La Aurora 1903 Preferidos Emerald is presented in a very attractive 8-count cedar box with graphic and embossed details. Inside, the box contains the eight individual tubes (tubos) that protect each cigar. Also encountered inside the box is a small card with details regarding the lot number, date of aging of the cigars, packing date, and release date, among other bits of information. The cigar itself possesses a uniform Perfecto shape that is adorned by the embossed La Aurora label. 03:56 Second Third Into the second third of the cigar, the flavor profile has remained mostly consistent. The ash backbone is strong and the burn line has evened out from earlier. Additional tones detected at this stage include a harmonious oily, leather mouthfeel that wasn't detected earlier. The oakiness mentioned previously remains, though it's now accompanied by more sweet flavors. Here, the retrohale has more oak tones rather than the earthiness experienced in the first third. 04:42 Final Third Into the final third, the La Aurora 1903 Preferidos Emerald remains as a medium-strength cigar, however, a sweet raisin tone has become more prominent though a spicier profile remains. Overall, the oily mouthfeel and flavor profile described throughout this review make this a very enjoyable smoke. 05:15 Cigar Construction The construction of this 5x54 Doble Figurado is quite impressive. Generally, the Perfecto is a difficult cigar to roll which often leads to imperfections in the burn. While the burn line is wavy here, it remains even as the cigar is smoked. 05:49 Occasion & Pairings The RRP of this La Aurora cigar makes it a more premium smoke that could be reserved for special occasions such as a wedding. Moreover, the presentation makes it ideal for special events as the box can be opened and individual tubos can be shared with guests. The earthy and oaky notes of the cigar lend it to be paired with salted nuts or chips. Alternatively, a more formal pairing could be a seafood dinner. The flavor profile also makes the Preferidos Emerald a great companion to a Dominican rum such as Brugal Leyenda or a Nicaraguan Flor de Caña 12 or 18 years aged rum. When pairing this La Aurora 1903 with wine, a smooth California Pinot Noir would work; otherwise, champagne may also pair well here. 07:27 Overall Thoughts In general, the cigar's profile rests in the medium to full-body smoke. Undertones of spice evolve into sweetness later into the cigar. Perhaps most notable of this Perfecto Preferidos Emerald is a harmonious mouthfeel and palate. And as before, the beautiful presentation makes it an almost ideal gift at a wedding.
