2023 Apr 28 FRI 70°F/56°C -- A daytrip to Cadiz from Sevilla via Renfe train that took less than 1.5 hr. And we saw/learned a lot of interesting things about Cadiz. Cádiz was once a very rich city because of its geographical advantage, being a city port in the southwest region of Spain that is almost entirely surrounded by water stretching far out to Atlantic Ocean. Historically, many settlers like the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors, British ... had come, conquered and occupied the city. After the Reconquest on wealth taken from the New World where it monopolized the trade between Spain and the Americas, Cadiz saw its glorious days and prospered. It was once the capital city of Spain. The city also lays claim to be the oldest in Europe. Hence, to enjoy and appreciate its glorious past and old charm, Cadiz is best explored and understood by foot. And this is exactly what we did in 8 hours, walk and explore from the train station to the city's historic center and the waterfront. In the Old Town, we enjoyed the narrow alleys, vibrant open plazas, New and Old Cathedrals, busy Mercado Central, towers with commanding aerial views of the city skyline and the entire Pueblo Blanco, food, museums, talented street performers, fascinating street life and so on. Roaming the oceanfront promenade before heading back to train station, we got to see/appreciate its city walls and fortifications like the 16th century Las Puertas de Tierra, Torre Tavira ll, Plaza Espana and nice beaches. A tiring yet fun day worth doing again in the future. Music Credit Cordoba by Nash Carrot from https://freemusicarchive.org/music/ne... Erratum: Depart Sevilla to Cadiz at 10:30AM and not 7:30AM
