Hello friends, Quakers in the Philadelphia region are gathering to attend an important theatrical event: The Return of Benjamin Lay. It’s all about a quirky Quaker, just over four feet tall. A fiery 18th-century abolitionist who used street theatre to galvanize the movement against slavery within the Religious Society of Friends, and continues to inspire through the generations. Benjamin wrote one of the earliest anti-slavery essays in the 13 colonies. (In 1737, Ben Franklin printed it.) Benjamin is also one of the first known animal-liberation advocates of the English-speaking world. This video includes a message taken from the 1737 essay to warm you up for the play! Join Quakers from the Haverford Quarter attending a performance on Thursday evening, May 1. Or pick any date from May 1st to 18th and plan a field trip for your own local group. The Return of Benjamin Lay is based on Marcus Rediker’s book The Fearless Benjamin Lay and produced by the Quintessence Theatre Group at the Sedgwick Theater in Mount Airy: 7137 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19119.
