The India–U.S. trade deal has sparked mixed reactions across sectors, as the government maintains that national interests are safeguarded despite limited public clarity. In manufacturing and energy, India is expected to ramp up big-ticket imports including U.S. aircraft, LNG, crude oil and nuclear materials, potentially taking annual U.S. imports close to 100 billion dollars. On trade balances, this could narrow — or even reverse — India’s current 46-billion-dollar surplus unless exports rise under the relatively lower 18% tariff rate offered to Indian goods. Agriculture remains the most politically sensitive sector: while the government says farmers will be protected. While Washington projects the agreement as a major win and a step toward correcting trade imbalances, questions persist in New Delhi over the impact on India’s trade surplus and its farmers. The opposition has seized on the uncertainty, accusing the Modi government of conceding too much, as political disruptions in Parliament prevent a full debate. Until the final text is signed and made public, the deal is likely to remain as much a political flashpoint as an economic one.
