Emaki (book or scroll) mono (thing) Exactly two years after my last trip to Japan I pulled out my collection of papers and cloth. Some from the trip and some from research over 40 years ago when studying on a Churchill and Japan Foundation Fellowship respectively.. I referenced the narratives contained within the traditional constructs of the Japanese scrolls in which only part of the story can be seen at a time (unless the pieces are hung) These scrolls typically offer a glimpse into Japanese daily life. I have used the references to drain covers, combs and things seen or collected on the paths around one garden in Tokyo to tell my story in the found papers and cloth reflecting my theme. I collect wherever I go, and this piece equally marks the 40 years since my first studies in Japan which led to my 'walking the world' collecting stories and images wherever I went. It celebrates equally, the significance of those collections to my continued learning and love of Japanese culture today. Ki Mono means 'Thing' to wear.
