The Sustained Connection: 8 Nights in Marin This vlog is a slice of two scenes in a much larger story, where the ferry and the model represent the exact way I want to observe, research, and execute. This trip was a rare alignment of time and intent. We spent eight nights in Marin, a window that allowed us to move past the surface level and into the kind of sustained connection that truly matters. I feel incredibly lucky to have had this time with my dad, Jay. For someone navigating the complexities of Parkinson’s and Lewy Body, these days weren't just a visit; they were a lifeline to his own history. We measured the trip not in hours, but in shared presence: five meals with his sister Susan and three meals with his sister Amy. These eight moments around a table were the anchors of the trip—hours of conversation, laughter, and the simple, profound act of being family. The Sailor’s Perspective: Scale and Speed As a lifelong sailor, my dad’s mind is calibrated to the water. I took him to the USACE Bay Model in Sausalito to see the entire hydraulic system of the San Francisco Bay laid out in miniature. It was a study in scale—watching a man who has spent decades on the actual water look down at the "simulated" version of his home. To contrast that stillness, we hit the open bay on the high-speed ferry, reaching 42 mph. There is something transformative about that kind of velocity on the water. Seeing a sailor’s reaction to that speed—the way he watches the wake and feels the trim of the boat—is a reminder that his deep-seated knowledge of the sea remains sharp, even as other things change. President School: Systems, Nature, and Governance While this was a personal journey, the work of President School is always in motion. This trip provided a unique laboratory to study the intersection of systems and nature. We were even able to take a private tour of the Benicia Capitol, exploring the original seat of California's government. Walking those historic halls with a sailor—looking at architecture literally built from the masts of old ships—provided a perspective on governance and infrastructure that you can't get from a textbook. The Marinship Museum stands as a critical case study for President School because it documents a total systemic transformation: the overnight conversion of Sausalito’s waterfront from a quiet shoreline into a high-output, 24/7 industrial engine for the war effort. It represents the exact intersection of systems and nature I study—where human logistics and the physical constraints of the bay are forced into a high-speed symbiosis to meet an urgent national need. Observing the relics of Marinship alongside my dad, a sailor who understands the "bones" of a vessel, provides a direct link to the type of bold, infrastructure-focused execution I want to model. This vlog is the record of that intersection: the personal reality of caregiving and family, the physical reality of the bay, and the theoretical work of building a better future.
