This is an update to my journey with bladder cancer. It has been two years since I had my kidney and ureter removed due to a cancerous mass in the ureter. Over the past two years, I have had two rounds of chemo, where it is placed into the bladder, once a week for six weeks. The first set of treatments using Mitomycin did not work, and a tumor was found again. Next it was a six-week series with the compound Gemcitabine. This worked and so far, no recurrence of cancer. I will be undergoing maintenance treatment once a month. One tip I found out listed from other cancer centers was to take sodium bicarbonate prior to treatments with either of the two drugs. This helps to alkalinize the urine and can reduce the irritation caused by the chemo drugs. My doctor agreed with this, and I only did it after making sure it was ok with him. Never do anything without checking with your doctor first!
