Blast from the past: Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper reviewing movies in 2006, which was also Ebert’s last year co-hosting the show. The movies reviewed were “Curious George” (opened Feb. 10, 2006), “Hard Candy” (opened April 28, 2006), “X-Men: The Last Stand” (opened May 26, 2006) and “A Prairie Home Companion” (opened June 9, 2006). In June 2006, Ebert underwent surgery to have a cancerous tissue near his right jaw removed. A week later, his stay at the hospital had to be extended when his carotid artery burst. As a result, he was unable to speak and was kept off the air. Still unable to speak, he did not return to the show but continued submitting written reviews at the Chicago Sun-Times. In early 2008, he underwent surgery hoping to restore his voice, but it was not successful. By then he ended his association with the show in mid-2008 after the producers decided that they wanted to take the show in a new direction. By 2011, his lower jaw had to be removed. During all this time, Ebert continued to submit reviews to the Sun-Times until his death on April 4, 2013. He was 70.
