about this video "Feeding of carnivorous plants - Understanding how these amazing plants trick insects" One could spend a lifetime studying these amazing plants and still find new surprises. These unique and beautiful plants have evolved into one of the most creatively adapted plant species on our planet. In this episode- Today we get to spend another action packed day with Paul Blackmore from the Atlanta Botanical Garden discussing the incredible diversity and beauty of the big and the treasures it holds. Paul breaks down the differences between active and passive carnivorous plants. Examples of passive carnivorous plants would be the pitcher plant where examples of active carnivorous plants would be the Venus Fly Trap and the Sundew. After many years of growing carnivorous plants I learned something new from Paul today which is that these plants exist in a fire-dependent ecosystem. This is quite important to their growth cycle as annual fires wipe out weeds that compete for sunlight as well as parasites that attack the pitcher plants. These cleansing fires clear the way for spring blooms which are beautiful! The flower on a pitcher plant loosely resembles a Lenten Rose bloom or even something in the Orchid family. By late June the flower capsule has fully mature seeds that fall to the ground to start the next generation of plants! These new platelets will soon begin feeding on insects to store up the food they need for winter thus completing an intricate and important cycle of life for these unique plants.
