Geodes form in a both igneous or sedimentary settings and are found in various locations around the world! Depending on how they formed they can have a variety of different minerals inside! Igneous geodes form as vesicles, that is, bubbles that formed in lava as it was cooling that never quite made it to the surface. This left the perfect cavity for crystals to line over time. Sedimentary geodes typically form as other types of nodules or fossils erode out, leaving a cavity. In order to be a geode, the object has to be independent from its host rock and crystal lined. TECHNICALLY, a geode does not have to be hollow, it can be completely filled with crystal.
