Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (*c. 1525 – d.1594) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovann... Secular Motet 5 vv (SATTB) Canticum Canticorum, 1584 [Palestrina's setting of the text is scored for 5 voices: SATTB (1 - 18, 29)] No. 27: Quam pulchra es et quam decora (How fair and pleasant you are) Chapter 7: 6 - 8 7: 6 Quam pulchra es et quam decora, carissima, in deliciis! 7: 7 Statura tua adsimilata est palmæ, et ubera tua botris. 7: 8 Dixi: Ascendam in palmam et apprehendam fructus eius; et erunt ubera tua sicut botri vineæ et odor oris tui sicut malorum How fair and pleasant you are, O loved one, in delights! This your stature is as a palm tree, and your breasts are like its clusters. I say I will climb the palm tree and lay hold of its branches. O may your breasts be like clusters of the vine, and the scent of your breath like apples. Canticum Canticorum (Song of Solomon) is a cycle of 29 motets by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Originally titled Motettorum - Liber Quartus, this Renaissance work is one of Palestrina's largest collections of Sacred motets. The work is in Latin and based upon excerpts from the book in the Song of Songs of the Old Testament. The Song of Songs is thought to be an allegorical representation of the relationship of God and Israel as husband and wife. The text uses the main image of a man and wife almost throughout, the poem suggesting movement from courting to consummation. -
