Count Dracula is undoubtedly the most famous creation of Irish writer Bram Stoker. His Gothic horror story has been adapted and filmed hundreds of times since its publication in 1897, and in the 21st century it has been interpreted, reinterpreted and analysed from every perspective imaginable. But what of Bram Stoker himself, what do we know about the life of the writer whose Carpathian creation is one of most famous fictional characters… ever? In this biographical documentary Professor Graeme Yorston explores the life and death of the surprisingly elusive writer. A man who produced eleven other novels besides Dracula, but who was far better known in his lifetime for being a theatre manager than for his authorial accomplishments. A man about whom there has been wild speculation regarding his life, his loves and the circumstances of his leaving. A man for whom it is important to separate out the facts from the fiction. Finding Out More Stoker’s life too has been subjected to speculations unjustified by the facts. Even though his journal and research notes have survived, biographical information, especially on his personal life is thin. This has led to some rather unimpressive biographies, and I would avoid David Skal’s book unless you’re interested in Oscar Wilde. Barbara Belford’s biography is the best I have listed this on my Amazon Store Page. https://www.amazon.com/shop/professor... Academic References Collins, D. (2008).
