In mijn oude video-opnames van de Belgische Radio en Televisie-zender vond ik de unieke Nederlandstalige BRT-bewerking uit 1990 terug van de oorspronkelijke documentaire 'VINCENT' (1987) van de Australische filmmaker Paul Cox. De unieke stem van de Vlaamse acteur Julien Schoenaerts vertolkt indringend de gedachten van Vincent van Gogh in zijn talrijke brieven vanuit Nederland (Zundert), België (de Borinage 1880), Frankrijk( Parijs, Arles, Saint-Remy, Auvers 1890) aan zijn vier jaar jongere broer Theo, kunsthandelaar in Nederland. De documentaire verhaalt en geeft duiding met de eigenste woorden van Vincent zelf in onze taal over de laatste tien jaren in het leven en werk van de mysterieuze grote meester in zijn schilderkunst Vincent van Gogh ( van de 27-jarige predikant-tekenaar in de Borinage tot de 37-jarige kunstschilder Vincent, die gekweld door uiterste geestelijke nood overlijdt in Auvers-sur-Oise). ---------------- Vincent: The Life and Death of Vincent van Gogh (1987) is a documentary film by Australian director Paul Cox, exploring the last ten years of the artist's life. Cox was attracted to the project because of his personal admiration for Vincent van Gogh: I found him such a compassionate, wonderful human being. That attracted me above all. I found him always honest, always real, always doing his utmost, and I related very much to his type of loneliness. It's the loneliness, the dreadful loneliness that I've known all my life. That was still much stronger for me when I tried to become a film-maker - you know, up to 30, 35, I was terribly alone. I was not equipped for the world at all, and, at that level, that is a very similar background to Vincent.[2] The screen images consist of a wide selection of the paintings and sketches, shown in a chronological sequence, supplemented by shots of the locations he lived in, and a number of dramatised reconstructions of biographical events.
