The singer is Walter Widdop. In distant land, denied to figures mortal, stands the keep, and Monsalvat's its name. It guards a temple with a gleaming portal. The wide world cannot match its beauty famed. Therein the cup of wondrous power and holy, and held in irons grave alone upstands, long since as cleansing gift to mankind lowly was brought to earth from heaven by angel hands. And year by year a dove descends from heaven whose holy charm renews its mystic spell. It's called the Grail! And purest grace is given to all brave knights who strive to serve it well. That faithful knight, whose service pure elected, the Grail doth guard with irresistible might. From hand of evil is his sword protected, and darkness and death are vain before his sight. Although his way to distant lands he wendeth, to fight for right and injured wrong atone, yet the grail still divine protection lendeth, if but that knight be nameless, all unknown. Close-veiled from eye profane the grail is hidden, and none save the elect its secrets know. His thoughts disclose at victory forbidden, or learn his name, for then that knight must go. Just ask, now shall come hear the words, the story, the Grail bidding me come, I hither came. My father Parzival gloriously reigneth. His knight am I, and Lohengrin my name. Here is a different translation from German into English (from an Evan Williams disc): In distant land, by ways remote and hidden, there stands a burg that men call Monsalvat; it holds a shrine, to the profane forbidden. More precious there is nought on earth than that; and throned in light it holds a cup immortal that whoso sees from earthly sin is cleansed. It was borne by angels through the heavenly portal. Its coming hath a holy reign commenced. Once every year a dove from heaven descends to strengthen it anew for works of grace. It is called the Grail, the power of heaven attends the faithful knights who guard that sacred place. He whom the grail to be its servant chooses is armed henceforth by high invincible might. All evil craft its power before him loses, the spirits of darkness where he dwells take flight. Nor will he lose the awful charm it had taken Although he should be called to distant lands, when the high cause of virtue he defends. While he's unknown, its spell he still commands. By perils dread the holy Grail is girded. No eye rash or profane its light may see. Its champion knight from doubting shall be warded. If known to man, he must depart and flee. Now mark, craft or disguise my soul disdains. I was sent here among you by the Grail: my father Parzival gloriously reigneth; his knight am I, and Lohengrin my name. Lohengrin sings this aria to a crowd in Act III before the swan returns. In it, he announces to Elsa what he had hoped to never utter: his name! Earlier in the opera he had Elsa promise not to ask for his name. But she does ask. He gives the names and leaves forever! This aria was in some ways a traditional opera piece--a singer hogs the stage as time stands still, everyone listening, no interrupting. At the same time, Wagner's genius shines here: no earlier aria sounds remotely like this! Fun fact: Wagner wrote an aria that is TWICE this length during the draft stage, but then the composer cut the aria to what we now know and love. Twice the length would have been too much of a good thing. I bet a long aria would wear out any tenor! In the key of A (with lots of F#m), this has an airy, heavenly quality that was new for its time and remains enchanting today. The listener had been prepared by the opera's opening Prelude, which itself was fresh. Richard Wagner's Lohengrin: In fernem Land IN ENGLISH -- "In Distant Land" Walter Widdop
