Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. About the story: Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski was born on 1 March 1899 in the town of Lębork, then part of the German Empire. After the war, Bach-Zelewski remained in the German army and fought in the Silesian Uprisings against Polish forces. In 1921, he married Ruth Apfeld, and the marriage produced six children. In July 1930, Bach-Zelewski joined the Nazi Party, and just months later, in February 1931, he became a member of the SS. On the 30th of January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg. During the Night of the Long Knives in July 1934, he took part in the purge of the SA, using the opportunity to eliminate his personal rival, Anton von Hohberg und Buchwald, who was an officer in both the Prussian Army and the SS. For his role in the purge, Bach-Zelewski was promoted to SS-Gruppenführer, a rank equivalent to Major general. In the following years, despite repeated conflicts with other Nazi officials, Bach-Zelewski continued to rise through the ranks, and in 1938, he was appointed Higher SS and Police Leader for Silesia. The Second World War started on 1 September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Following the Polish defeat, Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski played a key role in enforcing Nazi racial and settlement policies. Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, appointed Bach-Zelewski as his deputy for East Silesia, where he oversaw the mass resettlement of ethnic Germans and the confiscation of Polish private property. More than 18,000 Poles were expelled from their homes in a single operation under Bach-Zelewski's command. He also initiated the establishment of Auschwitz concentration camp...
