#upscpreparation #sociology #ugcnet Talcott Parsons’ Concept of Functional Prerequisites (AGIL Framework) Talcott Parsons explained society and organisations through a structural–functional approach. According to him, for any social system (society, organisation, or institution) to survive, remain stable, and function effectively, it must fulfil certain basic functional requirements, called functional prerequisites. Parsons summarised these requirements in the AGIL framework, consisting of four essential functions: Adaptation (A) The system must adapt to its environment and mobilise resources to meet its needs. Example: In society, the economic system performs this function by producing and distributing resources. Goal Attainment (G) The system must define goals and mobilise resources to achieve them. Example: The political system sets collective goals and ensures their achievement. Integration (I) The system must regulate relationships among its parts and manage conflict to maintain unity. Example: The legal system ensures coordination and social order. Latency or Pattern Maintenance (L) The system must maintain motivation, values, and cultural patterns over time. Example: Family, education, and religion perform this function. Conclusion: Parsons argued that fulfilment of all four functional prerequisites is essential for the stability and continuity of any social system. Failure in any one function can lead to dysfunction or breakdown of the system.
