This is the Pomus, Shuman song first recorded in 1960 by the Drifters with Ben E. King on lead vocal. I don't know why the name "Valentina" was added to the title (in fact it actually replaced the title) for the Spotnicks 1963 version of it, nor who actually did the arrangement but I suspect it was the Spotnicks themselves. Sadly the brilliant Spotnicks only had 4 UK hits and this was not one of them! Geeks, Nerds and Anoraks Corner. I spent alot of time trying to find a sound like Bo Winberg's for this, with limited success. I suspect that Bo's incredibly fat sound with acoustic overtones was produced by his own electronics wizardry. On my Vox ToneLab ST the acoustic amp model provided the acoustic overtones but on both my American Series Strat and the Squier Classic Vibe 50s Strat it did not sound right no matter how much I adjusted the EQs. The best I could find was on the Squier middle and bridge pickups with boosted treble, but on this the acoustic amp model sounded terrible! So I recorded it without the acoustic amp model and was reasonably satisfied, but then I thought I'd try the Squier Classic Vibe 70s Jaguar, and it was so much better. So I used the bridge pickup with strangle switch on through the acoustic amp model, boosted the treble slightly on the Tascam recorder, added some reverb and this was easily the best sound I could achieve on my gear. I hope someone out there thinks it worthwhile. I have had the backing track for some time and I think it must be one of Pete Korving's.
