Study of anti-ulcer activity by pylorus ligated (SHAY) rat model and NSAID induced ulcer model

The ulcers damage the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum from the gastric acid and pepsin. Such damage is often caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, but non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and other factors may lead to peptic ulcers. Screening of compounds or extracts in rat models are suitable for finding out their antiulcer potential. The most widely used method is pyloric ligation (SHAY rat) model and NSAID induced ulcer model. This presentation gives a brief picture of the methodology of these ulcer models, useful for practical and research purpose.
