Waheed Murad had begun Hero as a passion project, aiming to revive the fading charm of romantic cinema in the early 1980s and reintroduce himself in a more mature, action-oriented role. He personally took interest in its script and casting, hoping the film would mark a strong comeback after a string of box-office disappointments. However, financial troubles, creative differences with the director, and Murad’s declining health led to repeated delays in production. After his tragic death in 1983, Hero was left incomplete, throwing the team into disarray. The producers struggled with how to continue the project — whether to use doubles, rewrite the story, or cast another actor entirely. It was during this period that Salahuddin Tunio’s name surfaced as a possible replacement to finish the remaining scenes. The crew wrestled with emotional and artistic challenges, torn between preserving Waheed Murad’s legacy and completing the film he had poured his heart into.
