Drawing on a mixed-method approach, this study examines key trends, challenges and opportunities for further development of doctoral education in business. In-depth interviews with university and faculty administration, academic staff, PhDs and an online survey of doctoral candidates shed light on an overarching role of doctorate in business, experience and skills prioritized in the recruitment process, factors determining the choice of doctoral programs, knowledge and competences developed throughout the academic program, scope of research and its relevance to industry, supervision schemes, funding opportunities, potential employment areas, rigor of training and quality of the degree, professional development and support services available and challenges associated with the PhD study. An online survey provides insights into PhD’s satisfaction with program quality, advising, professional development opportunities, career prospects and key areas of concern. Triangulation of findings derived from the undertaken field study and relevant secondary sources deepens our understanding of existing best practices and areas of concerns requiring further attention.
