When traveling through Yunnan, China, you may encounter the Bulang ethnic group, an ancient community with a population of approximately 127,000, primarily residing along the Lancang River in Xishuangbanna, Lincang, and Pu’er. Descendants of the ancient “Pu” people, the Bulang have preserved their cultural heritage for over 3,000 years, renowned for their tea craftsmanship and vibrant traditions. Guardians of Tea The Bulang are stewards of Yunnan’s famed Pu’er tea. Their signature bamboo筒茶 (Zhú Tǒng Chá) involves roasting tea leaves in hollow bamboo stalks over fire, infusing the brew with woody sweetness. Another delicacy, suan茶 (fermented sour tea), is aged in buried bamboo tubes for months, creating a tangy elixir cherished in rituals and daily life. Visitors can join tea-picking sessions or learn traditional roasting techniques from local women. Living Artistry Bulang clothing is a kaleidoscope of symbolism. Women’s headdresses, layered with black cloth and embroidered with五彩丝线 (colorful threads), symbolize fertile mountains, while their aprons depict the mythical “rat gnawing a gourd”—a tale of ancestral survival. Men’s silver-buttoned tunics mark lunar cycles, jingling with every step like mountain echoes. Festivals of Light and Water During the Water-Splashing Festival (Songkran), the Bulang build sand pagodas, bathe Buddha statues, and drench each other in blessings. The Gatangpa Festival features刀舞 (sword dances) and a grand “Long Street Banquet,” where fiery Sichuan hotpot, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, and翡翠酒 (jade-green rice wine) unite communities. Sacred Hearth At the heart of every Bulang home lies the eternal hearth. This firepit, believed to host ancestral spirits, is where families gather for storytelling,烤茶 (roasted tea ceremonies), and rituals like “washing cow feet”—a spring purification rite. Join elders as they recount legends of the creator god Gumiya, whose tears forged rivers and whose breath ignited the first flame.
