Uttarkashi Cloudburst: Mudslide Devastation Sweeps Away Buildings | Uttarakhand News | India Today

A cloudburst incident in Uttarakhand has led to a significant mudslide, causing widespread devastation. Senior officials, including the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and Commissioner of Garhwal Division, are monitoring the situation from the State Disaster Operations Centre in Dehradun. The Uttarakhand government has systems for such incidents, but coping with the scale of this event is challenging. Past cloudbursts have occurred in the region, including one during the Char Dham Yatra in Yamunotri, where construction workers were swept away. Dr. M.P.S. Vish, from the Department of Geology, explained that glacial lakes in high mountain reaches can breach, releasing accumulated silt, rocks, and mud. Commercialization of the Char Dham Yatra has led to numerous commercial buildings, hotels, restaurants, and dharamshalas being erected near river drains, contributing to the calamity.
