This tank has been running for three and a half months and has transformed into a lush pearlweed jungle. The Walstad method is all about creating a low-maintenance, balanced ecosystem, and in this video, I’ll show you exactly how I achieved that. The tank features a topsoil substrate capped with gravel, which, combined with the fast-growing pearlweed, acts as a natural water purifier, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the shrimp. We start by selecting the right tank—a 25-liter (6.6 US gallon) Diversa aquarium for those in Europe, with alternative recommendations for viewers in the UK and North America. I also discuss the optional addition of a background using privacy film, which is an easy and affordable way to enhance the look of your tank, especially in the early stages before the plants fully grow in. Next, I walk you through the setup of the substrate, beginning with a layer of topsoil, which is carefully prepared and compacted to ensure the best growing conditions for the plants. I then add a 1-inch thick capping layer of gravel, explaining the ideal 2:1 ratio of capping material to topsoil that promotes healthy plant growth.
