The Gold Standard | What Are Randomised Controlled Trials and Why Are They Important?

Randomised controlled trials are regarded as the 'Gold Standard' for testing whether new treatments work. This short film from the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit explains what they are, and why they are important. #Clinicaltrials are a fundamental part of clinical #research. They are aimed at comparing a new treatment against the best available current standard #treatment. The aim is to try to see if the new treatment is safe and effective. Clinical trials can be done in a variety of settings including; hospitals, communities, and doctors surgeries. They are essential in judging whether a new treatment is worth introducing for routine clinical practice. A randomised control trial is a specific type of clinical trial. The aim of a randomised trial is to reliably say whether a new treatment is better than the existing treatment. A group of individuals are randomly allocated between the new and old treatments and the two groups compared to see which treatment performs best.
