As their first truly modern front-wheel drive car and a late-comer to the burgeoning supermini market, the ever-conservative Ford of Europe distilled their peers’ engineering pluralism into a platform that didn’t amaze, but felt sturdy, proved reliable and efficient, and that stood the test of time. On motorways, the Fiesta’s Kent engine will sing merrily away at very high revs, all day and all night, while around town, its light steering and accurate gearbox made it a joy to pedal about in. While it may not enjoy the overall balance, handling, or ride quality of some others, the Fiesta is the car the people needed.
