I would like to share a very disappointing experience I had with Omantel Internet in Oman. I have been using Omantel Wi-Fi for the last 14 months without any major issues. However, a few days ago, suddenly at around 11 PM, my internet stopped working completely. I tried unplugging and restarting the modem several times, but nothing worked. Then I contacted Omantel customer care and explained the situation in detail. They asked me to send my ID, internet number, photos, and even a short video showing the problem. I did everything they requested. After checking, they told me that the router might be faulty and advised me to visit the nearest Omantel office to replace it. They also explained that since I was on a two-year contract, router replacement is free within the first year, but after one year I would need to pay 16 Omani rials for a new router. Following their instructions, I traveled nearly 200 kilometers to the nearest Omantel office, spending about 25 rials on taxi fare. When I reached there and explained everything, the staff member was very rude and unprofessional. The hospitality was extremely poor. To my shock, he told me that there was no such immediate router replacement and that I would have to wait 4 to 6 days, and even then it was not guaranteed. This completely contradicted what customer care had told me. I felt confused and frustrated after traveling so far. When I asked what other option I had, he suggested canceling my existing contract and starting a new one to get a new router immediately. But for that, I was told to pay a fine of 68 Omani rials. I was shocked because this meant I was spending nearly 100 rials in total including transportation—almost equivalent to 200 US dollars—just to get a router replaced. Later, when I contacted Omantel customer care again, they said that since the contract was already canceled, nothing could be done. This entire experience caused me a lot of stress and financial loss. In Oman, many people work hard the entire month to earn around 100 rials, and I ended up spending that amount in less than an hour due to poor service and miscommunication. I am sharing this experience to make people aware of how Omantel’s internet service and customer handling can be very disappointing. The lack of proper guidance, rude behavior at the office, and overall poor hospitality were unacceptable.
