Rochelle. It in itself is something of a legend amongst the railfan community, but for me, it holds a rather personal place. My first visit to the park came in 2000, two years after it's opening. Over the years that followed, my family and I held several "getaway weekends" there, staying in one of the local hotels and hanging at the park Saturday and Sunday, racking up countless childhood memories. Now, 21 years later, in spite of the changes that have happened both to the park and the surrounding railroads, it still brings a smile to my face every time I make the turn in off of Ninth Street, and it always will. The general concensus among our group as we made our latest return to Rochelle was that the day's action would be slow and unremarkable. With it being a Sunday and a religious holiday aside, Union Pacific's implementation of PSR had decreased traffic significantly, and with BNSF's general lack of action during daylight hours, alongside the windy forecast, prospects seemed bleak. Needless to say, nobody was expecting what was about to unfold. From 7 A.M. onwards, the ensuing show was more reminiscent of the way things had been than the way they were supposed to be. Among the highlights: several coal trains on the UP, an empty BNSF coke train, manifest freight action on both sides, plenty of EMD Leaders and DPUs, and the ever present hotshot intermodals. For me, the day was a reminder of simpler times, and it was one I think everybody present needed, especially after a year like 2020. Enjoy Everybody! There is plenty more to come!
