(13 Sep 2020) Protests in Colombia over excessive use of force by police continued on Saturday. Demonstrators gathered in front of the Colombia police's Immediate Action Command, where some protesters yelled and kicked anti-riot police or attempted to spray them with paint. According to local media reports, protesters were demanding justice for three women protesters who were arrested last week and claim to have been abused and raped at a Bogota police station. On Saturday, police attempted to disperse the crowd by kicking and throwing tear gas at demonstrators. The protest is also part of a wave of anger following Javier Ordóñez's death. Defense Minister Carlos Trujillo Holmes has offered an apology on behalf of the police for any illegal acts committed during Ordóñez's detention early Wednesday morning. Seven officers have been suspended as the probe advances. Ordóñez died early Wednesday following a confrontation caught on video by witnesses showing two officers pinning him down and tasering him while he begged them to stop. He was taken to a police precinct and later a hospital, where authorities say he arrived without vital signs. It comes at the same time as massive protests over racial discrimination and police abuse against Black citizens in the United States.
