Happy holidays! Special acknowledgement to Cameron and the NCTD crews for being nice to my Dad (who recorded this for me on his way home from work) the evening of Thursday December 23rd, 2021. Rainfall led to local flooding, police activity blocked northbound rail traffic near Carlsbad Village, and after two decades (and more than a million miles logged) F59PHI 3001 (on track 1) was simply unable to answer the bell for NCTD Coaster northbound train 639. F59PHI 3002 (on track 2) assumed the role and led 639 for an on-time departure from San Fe Depot, San Diego. SC-44 Charger 5002 powered a southbound revenue service and discharged her passengers before refurbished cab car 2310 led the Charger's consist toward 3001 and coupled accordingly while NCTD professionals safeguarded the red zone. After completing FRA mandated testing to ensure safe operations, the combined nine passenger car consist (with F59PHI 3001 sandwiched in the middle) was greeted with a green aspect for a non-stop deadhead. The last segment of this video features this non-revenue move as it safely powers through Sorrento Valley Station en route to the Stuart Mesa maintenance facility aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
