Threads. A single thread connects you to me, keeps us tethered, but also restrains us. A piece of thread can hold us together in safety, but it can also draw boundaries. Threads can knot, tangle in itself, create a mess; but the friction of just a single stitch can bind fabric together. Pull at a piece of string and it just might break -- or not. Two threads, three threads makes a rope, a tassel, a lifeline. People from across time, cultures and societies have found different ways to use this genre of materials. They can be woven into cloth, fishing nets, fences, wires, sieves, turbans, helmets. They have been used for attack and defense, protection and care, rescue and restraint, decoration and destruction. A simple material can hold so much duality in it. This is our starting point. The project is an ensemble-based physical theatre piece, working through collaborative devising. Our ensemble is made up of three theatre makers and one dancer. This is our very first round of devising, so we are working with a lot of unknowns. We’re using a range of different stimulus to create a story — at the showing, we hope to present a story (or stories) with movement, song and text.
