A defiant Milosevic denounced the democratically elected government of Vojislav Kostunica as "traitors and occupiers." The former strongman made the comments in a fiery speech that indicated he still hankers after power. VOICE-OVER: 00.00 UPSOUND of applause 00.03 Arriving to a hero's welcome. The man who once ruled Yugoslavia with an iron grip. Hearing this applause no-one would think Slobodan Milosevic is now completely discredited amongst the Serb population at large. But most people blame him for the economic and social misery that has crippled the country. Milosevic was appearing at a congress of his Socialist Party. In his opening speech he condemned Yugoslavia's new government. 00.27 SOUNDBITE: (Serb-Croat) "Those who defended the country during last year's aggression, those who stayed in the country are proclaimed as enemies, those who fled the country and supported the bombing and collaborated with the aggressor now appear to be patriots and saviours of the country." SUPER CAPTION: Slobodan Milosevic, Former Yugoslav President 00.50 Despite his fall from grace, within his own party Milosevic still has a firm following. he was re-elected as party president. 00.58 UPSOUND of Milosevic speaking 01.02 Milosevic has been buoyed up by the refusal of President Kostunica to hand him over to the war crimes tribunal in the Hague. And, by the tone of this appearance, the Belgrade strongman still thinks he has a chance of once again grabbing the reins of power.
