Creekside Gold Mine & Mining Camp Loaded With Treasures

This mine only appears on the oldest maps of the area and it is difficult to locate information on its history. In other words, it is one of the older mines in the district and there appears to have been no serious production in well over a century at this abandoned gold mine. Based upon the mining infrastructure at the site and the nature of the adits we were able to access, it would seem that this was a classic “pocket” mine in that high grade ore was found in small pockets rather than with any consistency. The initial sampling must have started out well enough given the stamp mill, blower, ore cars and other mining equipment that the miners hauled down there. I assure you, that whether the miners brought the equipment down the side of the canyon or up the creek, it would have been difficult either way. The one report that I found that mentions the details of the workings states that they consisted of two adits and open cuts. We found the two adits down at the creek level and that notch in the slate and schist that had the cable leading to it was, obviously, one of the cuts. On the other side of the creek, where the caved adit was, were some other old cuts in the ground that we saw when we were looking around, but I didn’t bother to include those in the video. For the report to not mention the two adits that we found leading up the hill from the adit at the mining camp would suggest that they were run after the author of the report visited the gold mine, that the author was simply unaware of them (they were hidden in ferns) or that perhaps they were caved when the author visited and so he did not bother to mention them. They were clearly on the same vein, however, as they were directly in line with the open adit at the camp and the caved adit across the creek. Perhaps the best part of the vein was washed downstream when the creek cut through it? In the open adit at the mining camp, the interest of the miners seemed to be particularly focused on the point where the vein encountered the fault. You could tell that that zone where the quartz seams were running through the crushed schist was highly mineralized. I would be curious to know how that and the fault gouge assayed out. And, unfortunately, anytime that you get serpentine, slate and schist underground, you’re going to have issues with support and stability. You could tell there were definitely patches of bad ground in that area. As you can probably determine on your own, we are always curious about the mysteries hidden away underground. However, I believe the real treasures at this abandoned mine were in the form of that antique mining equipment on the surface.
