Few outcomes in sports are completely controllable by any single athlete, and mental skills training helps us with this. Focusing on controllable outcomes only will yield less moments of despair when things don't go our way simply due to random chance and bad luck. Thinking in percentages is a great way to insulate an athlete from this. Thinking in percentages gives an athlete a tangible way to say, "okay, if I do this, I have a 80% chance of getting the outcome I want, but I know that maybe every 20% of the time I do things right, I still may fail or lose because of the luck involved in the game.
