Ever find yourself longing for the past? Or yearning for what once was. You’re probably feeling some nostalgia! But what exactly is nostalgia? Defined as a wistful affection or longing for the past, it was originally coined by a Swiss physician in 1688, who thought of it as a disease affecting the Swiss soldiers who missed their alpine home. The word nostalgia comes from the Greek words nostos meaning return home and algia meaning pain. Today, we know nostalgia to be a universal human experience, where images, sounds, and tastes, can evoke memories and emotions. But out of all the senses, there is one that seems to always outperform the others. And that’s SMELL! One study showed that people remember 35% of what they smell, and only 5% of what they see. Was this really true? I decided to put it to the test with the ultimate nostalgia experiment. My family came up with a list of locations from my past, and blindfolded with sound proofing headphones, I’d have to figure out where I was using only my nose. I set off to my hometown of Thunder Bay with Elisa to put the smell memory test to work and relive a day in my teenage life. We hit up Agostino’s Deli, St. Patrick’s High School, The Persian Man, Lake Superior, McKellar Confectionary, and even my Uncle’s Wood Shop. So what is it about smell that makes it so powerful in connection to memory? Well smell is connected to the olfactory bulb in our brain. The olfactory bulb has a direct route to the limbic system which governs emotions and memories. Unlike other sense, smell bypasses other processing mechanisms and takes a short cut to out emotional core. The wood shop brought me back to intense and vivid memories of my grandfather, who smelled of sawdust and cigars. The smells brought back such vivid emotions that it even made me tear up. That’s when I realized why I love nostalgia; it’s because it makes me feel things so deeply, and as a human, it’s nice to feel. As Don Draper from Mad Men would say, Nostalgia is like a time machine!
