Back in those days European citizens were required to spend 14 days outside of the EU before heading to america. God knows why, I mean that seems to me like a perfect way to BRING covid to a country... go travel the world and expose yourself to germs in 5 or 6 extra unnecessary airports before heading to the states? What? Ok. Well, that was fine by me as we could head to lovely Georgia. Tom and I had traveled there on a lads trip two years prior and were thrilled to have the opportunity to show Vivi and Alexa why we loved Sakartvelo so damn much. On our first trip there we had heard about something called a "supra" but never got the chance to actually experience it for ourselves. What is a Supra? A supra is a traditional Georgian feast with tons and tons of wine. Basically you go through a series of 20+ toasts with the Supra leader, the "tamada", who starts things off with the traditional toasts to family, dead and living, God, religion, fallen soldiers and other staple parts of the traditional Georgian life. About midway through things usually get pretty loose and the whole idea of the Supra is that when you are inspired to make a toast, when you feel the passion like Tariel from Rustaveli's epic Knight in the Panthers skin, when you feel the passion in your heart.... you make a toast. Oh and the other thing about a Georgian Supra is that usually you are supposed to finish your glass when a toast is made and the glasses just get bigger and bigger as the knight goes on. We were so lucky to experience this tradition at Mestvireni with a group of traditional polyphonic singers who belted out classic songs and modern ones as well and truly transported us to another time, place and space.
