We visited these famous megalithic temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra in June 2020. The temples reopening its door and thanks to Malta Heritage initiation, the entry to both temples were complimentary..or lets say for a donation of 1Euro and you could choose a bag or a notepad after this donation - well, fine with me since I got a nice shopping bag :) You can get there by car or by bus and you can spend a whole day in the area. Apart from the temples, you can check out the famous Blue Grotto, plan you refreshment break/lunch in a town of Zurrieq or even go for a hike to see the Ghar Hanex (mini 'Azure window'). Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are situated in a very close proximity to each other however bring a big bottle of water with you and some snacks and put a sunblock because it can get really hot over there. You can get yourself an audio guide but I suggest to read or watch something about the temples prior to going. I can tell you the difference myself when I visited them in 2011 and now, in 2020 after watching lots of documentaries :) Both temple complexes were constructed in phases first the first temples dating all the way back to 3600 and with the youngest ones dating to 2500 BC. They are built from a limestone. Hagar Qim is made from the softer Globigerina limestone, which is used for buildings to this day however the weather conditions can deteriorate it faster than the harder Coraline limestone, which was used for the outer parts of the temples of Hagar Qim. You will see massive stone blocks forming the temples which can weight up to 20 tons and some measure over 5m in height. standing next to it will make you question a lot :) Most of the original findings are displayed at the National Museum of Archeology in Valletta so what you will see are copies. The temples are perfectly aligned with the rising sun at the equinoxes and solstices.Vernal equinox(about March 21): day and night of equal length, marking the start of spring. Summer solstice (June 20 or 21): longest day of the year, marking the start of summer. Autumnal equinox (about September 23): day and night of equal length, marking the start of autumn. On 23rd September 2020, the sun will be at equinox! The beam of light of the rising sun will be perfectly aligned with the main axis of this temple - I will try my best to watch this moment :) Thank you for watching!
